The Robert House...

The Robert House gets its name from one of our founders' late grandfather, Robert Palmer. Although he left the East Liverpool area to attend college and join the military during the Korean conflict, he spent the vast majority of his 91 years thriving and enjoying East Liverpool, Ohio. Robert (Bob) was a man of character, perseverance, strength, and joy. Those are the same characteristics of the City of East Liverpool. Robert embodied the spirit of the town.

The Robert House Inn is located in one of East Liverpool's many historic properties. Built in 1888, the building is an example of a variety of architectural styles and was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in May 1980. The house was built by Dr. George P. Ikirt who was a surgeon in East Liverpool in the late 1800's. He was also prominent in democratic politics and served in the US House of Representatives from 1893 to 1895.

East Liverpool was founded by potters in the early 1800's. English immigrant James Bennett became the community's first successful pottery manufacturer in 1840. By the 1880s, East Liverpool had the largest pottery manufacturing facility in the world, Knowles, Taylor & Knowles Pottery. During the early twentieth century, the Homer Laughlin China Company, took the title as the largest pottery manufacturer. During the twentieth century, East Liverpool proved to be an excellent site for a steel companies due to the abundance of iron ore and coal. During World War II, Crucible Steel made bullet casings for the US military. In the first half of the twentieth century, numerous breweries existed in East Liverpool as well. Prohibition severely damaged these businesses, but many of them persevered by switching from alcohol to soft drink production.

As the manufacturing industries began to change the population of East Liverpool began to dwindle. The town has suffered many years of residential and infrastructure decline. However, like the strong city that it is, it is now experiencing a period of regrowth with many new businesses opening up in the area. East Liverpool is re-branding itself to be a historic stop in the Ohio River Valley.

We welcome you to come book a stay at the Robert House Inn and experience the early change happening all around as the Pottery City continues its comeback!
